Antimicrobial expert launches sportswear collection

US-based PurThread Technologies, an antimicrobial textile developer, has launched a sportswear collection transferring its experience in the medical sector to create "odour-free" garments.

Its first products include golf shirts using the same proprietary fabric technology found in the company’s hospital scrubs and lab coats. The antimicrobial elements are embedded into every fibre to inhibit the growth of bacteria, mould, mildew and fungus.

"People work hard, play hard, and they are demanding the same of their clothing," said Jenifer Smyth, vice-president of consumer and military applications for PurThread. "Now, athletes and fitness enthusiasts have access to this next generation of high-performance antimicrobial sportswear."

The technology integrates an antimicrobial agent that produces a chemical species known as hydroxyl radicals into every fibre. This provides an even distribution of the active ingredient, while keeping the fabric soft and pliable. These hydroxyl radicals attack microorganisms along several parallel pathways - degrading the cell's protective bio film, rupturing the cellular membrane and disrupting the biological processes within the cell. Because the agent bonds with the fabric in its raw state, the agent's efficacy can withstand repeated laundering.

The PurThread Sport line is expected to expand to include base layers, socks, t-shirts and sweatshirts.
